THE CHALLENGES OF THE 21ST CENTURY WORK PLACE WHERE NO RULES BRINGS CREATIVITY

The work place is a combination of different schooled people who have gone through certain training in various fields, each contributing to the growth of the organization, but a serious bane in the work place is the level of ethics each one has which is not something taught in school.

THE FUNCTION OF THE ADMINISTRATION

The way issues are addressed, channels of communication as well as language syntax used by staffs lies on the management in putting down a structure where every one plays by the rule in a bid to ensure the work place is mentally conducive for effectiveness. Where the management fails to put a structure in place then the uncultured acts of the unethical who have a problem managing their emotion during outburst bring bad blood within the members of the organization and if I may say how organized will that “organization” consider itself?

THE PLACE OF RULES IN THE ORGANIZATION

There is a thin line between freedom and abuse, the older generation see rules in the work place as a way to checkmate excesses and unethical behaviors of people that is why a man from the rough places of Ajegunle can work ethically in the highbrows area of Lekki, Lagos and remain cultured same way the work environment with rules enable the guy who lives in Victoria Garden City (VGC) to work in an office in Mushin, Lagos. Rules are required to improve ethics, create a violent free environment and help check our emotional excesses.

The younger generation feels that rules inhibits creativity and pose a limitation to engaging in adventurous activities that are potential stepping stones to greater opportunities in an organization, yes as true as this is it is also a fact as we can see from organizations such as Microsoft, Apple and the likes where dress codes, office organizations and others are relaxed ruled for staffs in a way to encourage creativity and easiness but the reality remains that while Richard Branson will not play by certain office rules and Microsoft will allow staffs work in a “rule-free” environment, the awareness that freedom can be abused is also considered hence other things are put in place to instill a consciousness of the office environment and the effect of collective actions in the organization.

Creativity do not thrive in uncultured environment, in short creative people are self disciplined when it comes to work hence they then to enjoy a free work-environment but are more often that not distracted by the uncultured acts of others who do not understand the thin line between freedom and abuse of freedom.

HOW DO WE BREACH THE GAP BETWEEN NO RULES AND ENSURING WORK ETHICS?

It is “impossible” ( i do not like using the word impossible) to have a work environment with no clash except the work is done by robots. A no rule environment is as choking as a work place where rules are so strict, both will not enhance creativity in the 21st century work place; while the people with proper training will still manage to keep a balance of ethics in a free environment there is need for a structure, rules with clauses that encourage openness with civility, freedom without abuse, organization that do not promote limitation.

At this point it is important to note that experience is the best teacher and consideration is the key, everyone is different hence while the management may consider themselves experienced and would want to go for “no rule” system in other to encourage creativity, they should understand that not everyone is truly experienced neither is everyone in the organization is on the same plain of emotional and mental strength hence the “no rule” might pose a challenge on how everyone communicate with each other.

THE NEED FOR STRUCTURE IN A CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT

In a group of young people, creativity is high, productivity is much, ideas are in surplus, energy is not in short supply but how all these are management, properly channeled and communicated constructively in other to achieve the organisations’ goal is lacking, how then do we settle the scores of the ‘pros and cons’? STRUCTURE.

Rules are not structure, the 21st century employee do not like the word rules or law they have seen the limitations of rules and laws they love risk, adventures and a boundless workplace where they are not confined to a table/chair and job functions that and endless but no different in anyway, what they have not seen is the limitation that comes with this kind of environment.

WHAT IS APPLE/ MICROSOFT AND RICHARD BRANSON OF VIRGIN GROUP DOING DIFFERENTLY

Most successful innovative organizations (I am careful not to use the work Technology) have one thing in common-STRUCTURE, this has replaced rules. Richard Branson my faraway mentor would want to know the rules in other to break them, he would encourage every member of his team to find the rules and break them, does that make the work place in Virgin Group a confused, chaotic environment? not at all, and this is because rules have been replaced with structure.

STRUCTURE OR UNSTRUCTURED

It will be vain and this write up will be pointless if I fail to point out what structure is for clarity. To someone like me structure means different things which I am having issues spelling out in words maybe due to limitations of my use of English but I will put it this way ” Structure in the work place defines the syntax of our work, what we say, how we address issues, how we comport ourselves in and outside the environment, attitude to work, communication channels and a whole lot more”.

Rules limit, structure improves but there is a third thing which will come with change…Nothing is cast on stone.
